A Lancashire woman’s commitment to the community has led to her earning a prestigious award.

Law student Jessica Bebb, 20, received the LLB Prize for Community Engagement at a ceremony celebrating academic excellence at the University of Worcester.

Jessica, from Poulton-Le-Fylde, said: “Getting this award is a massive achievement for me. I made a conscious effort in my first year at university to get valuable work experience and engage with the local community. It has been an honour to be recognised for this, and it has massively boosted my confidence.”

Jessica has impressed her supporters back home in Lancashire while she’s working hard at the University in Worcester.

“Both my friends and family are proud of my achievements and accomplishments after many obstacles in my first year,” she said.

She continued: “My family, especially my mum and dad, were massively impressed that the University of Worcester offers Academic Scholarships and awards as it was something we weren’t aware of.”

The award came with a financial element, which Jessica said will make a big difference to her: “I used the prize to buy books and materials to help me in my second year of study,” she added. “This prize helps massively, as I come from a low-income background and I do sometimes struggle with the prices of books and equipment.”

Professor Sally Moyle, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the University, said: “We are incredibly proud of the students who have received academic scholarships.”

The scholarships and prizes are funded by generous philanthropists, including the University’s distinguished Honorary Fellows, local employers, and many successful graduates.

This year, staff at the University have also been raising funds for scholarship and hardship support as part of the University’s two-year Anniversaries Campaign, which marks 20 years since gaining full university status in 2005 and 80 years since its founding as an emergency teacher training college in 1946.

Professor Moyle added: “These awards demonstrate to potential employers the outstanding achievements of our students, while providing financial support and encouragement for those who’ve earned them.”
