Preparing for university: what you need to know

So, you’ve accepted your place at university — congratulations! This is an exciting time, but it’s completely normal to feel a whirlwind of emotions. Starting university is a big step, and if you're moving away from home for the first time, it can feel a little daunting too. But don’t worry, you’re not alone, and we’re here to help you feel as prepared and confident as possible.

Get your finances in order

Let’s get the less exciting stuff out of the way first: money matters. Budgeting might not be glamorous, but it is essential. Knowing how much you have to spend each month will help you plan your meals, nights out, and everything in between.

One top tip is to divide your student loan into monthly “wages” so you know exactly what you have to work with. From there, you can pay your bills first and then plan the rest of your spending. You can even top up your income with part-time work—at the University of Worcester, for example, you can apply to be an events ambassador or student ambassador. These roles are flexible and designed to fit around your studies.

Creating a simple list of all your expenses—rent, food, social life, travel—can help you stay on track and avoid any surprise end-of-month panic.

Make lists (trust me, they help!)

If you’re anything like me, lists will become your best friend. They’re a great way to remember everything you need to do and pack before moving. The University of Worcester’s social media channels are packed with tips from current students about what to bring, from essential cooking items to often-forgotten things like coat hangers and extension leads.

It’s also worth checking the university website to see what’s already provided in your accommodation. When packing, think beyond the basics—bring things that make your space feel like home. Photos, soft toys, your favourite pillow, or even a reed diffuser can make a big difference when you’re settling in.

And don’t forget course supplies! Most courses will send out specific information closer to the time, but notebooks, pens, and highlighters are always a safe bet.

Brush up on your cooking skills

Whether you’re a total kitchen novice or just want to expand your student meal repertoire, now’s a great time to get practising. There are loads of simple student recipes online, from jacket potatoes to one-pot pastas. Everyone starts somewhere, and no one expects you to be a gourmet chef on day one!

Plus, Uni life is full of opportunities to try food from different cultures and backgrounds—cooking (and eating!) can be a fun way to bond with your new flatmates.

Explore your new home

If you’re moving to Worcester (or commuting in), take some time to explore the area. Find out where your local supermarket is, scope out nearby cafes, or see which takeaway spots are popular with students. The University of Worcester’s website and social media are full of helpful local info.

If you’re commuting, doing a trial run of your route can help ease any first-day nerves—and who knows, you might meet a fellow student on the same journey!

Look after your wellbeing

It’s perfectly normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. University is a big life change, and your mental wellbeing is just as important as your academic success.

Talk to friends and family about how you’re feeling, and remember, support is available. The University of Worcester has a fantastic support service called Firstpoint, where you can access help and guidance throughout your time here.

Give yourself time to adjust, be kind to yourself, and know that everyone was new once. The Welcome Festival, societies, and your course itself are all brilliant ways to meet people and start building those all-important friendships.

Final reflections

Starting university is a huge milestone, and it’s okay to feel all kinds of ways about it. But with a little preparation—and a few handy lists—you’ll be ready to take this exciting step with confidence.

You've got this!
