How to find the right accommodation as an international student
Finding a place to live is one of the first big steps when you move to a new country. As an international student myself, I know how confusing it can feel at first. Here is a short guide to help you choose safe, comfortable accommodation in Worcester.
Start your search early
Begin looking as soon as you receive your offer. Early searches give you better prices, more options and less stress.
Choose the right type of accommodation
As a campus university, you'll find University-managed halls on both St Johns campus and City campus.
Halls on St Johns campus are great if you'll looking to live close to the Students Union, know you'll be spending most of your time on St Johns Campus or wanting to get involved with student sport, networks and socities.
If you prefer a quiter living environment and want to be close to shops and train station in the city centre, I would recommend choosing University-managed halls on City campus.
Have a look at the accommodation webpage to see the different types of University-managed accommodation, find out about the cost of rent and see whats included.
In addition to University-managed halls you could also consider:
- Private student halls: Modern and student-friendly, but prices vary.
- Private flats or houses: More independence, but make sure you understand contracts and bills.
Check what’s included
Before signing anything, confirm which utilities are covered. Common ones include electricity, water, gas and Wi-Fi. Ask for written confirmation if the listing says, “bills included.”
Pick the right location
Choose an area with:
- Safe surroundings
- Good walking, cycling or bus connections to campus
- Supermarkets nearby
If you're looking at accommodation outside of Worcester city centre, make sure you choose somewhere close to a train station or a well-served bus service so you can travel to campus in time for 9am lecturers, and be able to get home if you're staying on campus late in the evening.
Finding food from home
Worcester’s city centre also has several international shops where you can find ingredients for your favourite comfort foods. You can find Turkish, Kurdish, African, Jamaican, Chinese, and Indian foods. Some stores also offer products from Philippines, Thailand and specializes in Polish and Eastern European products.
Always view the property
Never skip a viewing. Ask for a video viewing if you are still abroad. Check the room condition, cleanliness and basic safety features.
Important: Viewings are always free. If someone asks you to pay a “viewing fee,” it is a scam.
Watch out for common scams
Be careful if:
- The landlord won’t show the property
- The price seems too cheap
- They ask for money before a viewing
- They rush you to decide
If something feels off, trust your instincts and walk away.
Leave time for background checks
Most agencies run background checks before you move in. These can take one to two weeks, so keep some time between finalising and moving in.
Add everyone to the contract
If you are living with your partner or friends, make sure their names are also on the agreement. It helps with future documentation like banking, GP registration and visa paperwork.
Use trusted sources
Stick to official University listings, trusted websites like Rightmove, On the Market or Zoopla and verified recommendations from students. Avoid paying deposits through random social media posts.
Talk to other students
Current students are one of the best sources of honest advice and real experiences. You can also reach out to the Students’ Union, and they will guide you to the right student networks or support groups that can help you with any questions or doubts you may have.
Accommodation hunting can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Start early, check the details and always view the place before saying yes. Worcester is a welcoming city with plenty of safe options, and there is always support available if you ever feel unsure.
