Ways to cope with homesickness at university
Many students face the feeling of homesickness at university – you’re not alone! Whether you’ve moved far away or you’re still close by, your feelings are valid and we want to help. Here are some of our top tips to combat that homesickness, so you can get out and enjoy your university experience!
Make your room feel like home
Your room is your personal space, so make it feel like you. Decorating with photos of family, friends, or your favourite places can bring a sense of comfort and familiarity. Add personal touches like your favourite blanket, a scented candle that reminds you of home, or small items that hold special meaning. These little details can make a big difference in helping you settle in. Your room should be a place where you feel safe, relaxed, and truly yourself.
Adding home comforts to your bedroom can make the world of difference. Reduce that feeling of change!
Phone home
Ringing home can benefit both parties. If you’re missing home, they’re probably missing you too! Sometimes a phone call is all it takes to make you feel better. You might even video chat with your family for the evening so it feels like you’re still there!
Explore the city
One of the best ways to ease homesickness is to get out and explore your new surroundings.
Worcester is a beautiful and welcoming city with so much to discover beyond the university campus. Take a stroll along the River Severn, visit the stunning Worcester Cathedral, or enjoy a peaceful afternoon at Gheluvelt Park. If you’re into history, the Tudor House Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s past. For something a bit different, why not try the retro arcade Retroids or hop on a river cruise for a unique view of the city?
The more you get to know the city, the more it will start to feel like yours.
Create a routine
When everything around you feels new, building a daily routine can bring a sense of calm and control. Try setting regular times for meals, study sessions, exercise, and relaxation. Even something as simple as a morning walk or a weekly call home can give your week structure and help you feel more grounded.
Spend time with your friends
Sometimes the best way to ease homesickness is simply to be around others. Spending time with your university friends can lift your mood and help you feel more connected. Remember, many of your peers are likely feeling the same way, especially other international students.
A great way to meet new people and build friendships is by joining a society or club. Whether you're into sports, music, gaming, volunteering, or cultural groups, there’s something for everyone. Societies are not only a fun way to pursue your interests, but they also give you a sense of community and belonging. You might even find a society that reminds you of home, or helps you discover something completely new!
Grab a cuppa at firstpoint
firstpoint’s ‘Fancy a Cuppa’ events are the perfect opportunity to talk away your homesickness. They can point you to effective support services, help you make friendships, give you a warm drink, and ultimately, find ways to combat your homesickness.
If you are also missing your best friend, we also have Therapy Dogs at some of our ‘Grab a Cuppa’ events if you need a cuddle. Sometimes all you need is a dog!
