Graduation day tips: what I wish I'd known
Graduation was a huge milestone for me. After three years of lectures, deadlines, late-night studying, and socials, it felt like everything came together for that one moment. I finally got to celebrate everything I had achieved with those closest to me.
While the ceremony and occasion were absolutely brilliant, I’d be lying if I said there weren’t a few practicalities I wish I’d thought of before! But don’t worry, readers, I’m here to make sure you don’t make the hiccups I made, so you can enjoy your graduation without any last-minute stress.
Timekeeping is everything (seriously)
If there is anything you take away from this blog, let it be this: plan your timings on the day! If you’re reading this blog, congrats, I know you’re already considering the planning process (good for you)! From traffic, queues or a cute dog on the route, you never know what might set you back a few moments. Remember, you’ll need to collect your gown, have a photo, meet friends, find your seat and walk between locations (phew!)
It's worth checking the map beforehand and planning your route – our TikTok account shows you a scenic route and a step-free route (for when your mum inevitably decides to wear those stilettos you warned her against)!
I recommend giving yourself an extra 15 minutes for each part of the day, as it could make all the difference. No rushing, no panicking; you’ll get a chance to breathe and enjoy the moment.
Get that photo sorted
If you’ve decided to have a professional photo taken, try and do it before the ceremony in EGA. You’ll be fresh, feeling excited and you know your gown will be perfectly in place!
This also means you won’t have to worry about coming back during the day, giving you plenty of time to take natural, more candid photos with your friends and family.
Scout out those cute photo spots
On that note, start thinking about where you want to take those beautiful graduation photos! Was there a particular section of the river walk you loved? Part of campus that you feel an affinity with? A particularly beautiful part of the cathedral?
If you're struggling to think of anywhere, we have a short video showing you some of the most popular spots, where I know you can get a beautiful shot (guaranteed you’ll be taking one on the bridge!)
Flat shoes for the win
Yes, I do know those heels look great but trust me when I say, you DO NOT want to be wearing those all day! With running to see your friends, walking over to the Cathedral and after-graduation celebrations in the University Arena, your feet will feel sore! Look finesse for the ceremony, wear those heels and walk the stage (you’ve earned it) but keep a pair of flats in your bag (or with your guests) for walking between venues. Trust me, you’ll thank me later!
Don’t overthink it!
It’s easy to worry about everything needing to be perfect and everything running smoothly. Please don’t worry though, there will be staff everywhere who can support you throughout the day. If you feel unsure where to go, what you need to do next or need somewhere for a rest, don’t hesitate to ask.
Graduation is a celebration of everything you’ve worked for, soak it all in and enjoy every minute. Make it your own – you’ve earned it.
