Dudley student stories

Meet the students studying at the Dudley Higher Education and Skills Centre.

Their stories capture real experiences of returning to education and preparing for meaningful careers in health and care, all while studying locally in Dudley.

Victor, a nursing student wearing a white nursing uniform

Victor Ohanuzue, second-year Adult Nursing student.

Being able to study in his hometown has made a huge difference to Victor.

“I’m here in my own environment,” he said. “I always say, I’m studying on a campus that’s behind my door; I can go to campus and study and then be back home in 10 minutes, and I never worry about traffic making me late.”

"It means so much to be able to do my course here where I live. On my breaks I can go for a walk, hear the animals in the zoo, and come back to class feeling refreshed; it really helps you work.”

“It’s not just me, it’s my co-students as well,” he said. “A lot of them feel the same, they say that the Dudley campus is helping people in the region who now don’t have to travel to go to university; we feel at home.”

Laura Morrish

Laura Morrish, second-year Adult Nursing student.

“I have had some really great placements, with such supportive staff who got me doing things I didn’t expect to be doing so early on,” she said. “I was going into people’s homes in the community and helping them live better in their environments. I’ve seen the difference surgery can make to improve someone’s quality of life."

“I wanted to see how healthcare works in other parts of the world, what they do differently, and what I could learn from that. I’ve secured a placement in Hong Kong; it’s only two weeks but it’ll give me an insight into what international nurses coming to the UK might have experienced.”

“I’m excited about the opportunity,” she added, “even though I’ll miss my family, this is something I just couldn’t say no to.”

Emma Heath

Emma Heath, a second-year Adult Nursing student.

“The main reason for me choosing to do my degree in Dudley was my family commitments,” she added. “I’ve got a young daughter, and if there’s ever an emergency, I can get over to her.”

Emma grew up in the area and knows it well. For her, being able to carry out her studies and placements so close to home has made a big difference to her.

“It takes me no more than 10 minutes to get to the campus from home, and all of my placements are local as well. If I had gone to another university, my placements could have been anywhere up to an hour away from home, but here I get to do my placements where I live. It has been ideal for me,” she said.
