A pioneering educator whose career has been dedicated to improving opportunities for young people has been Highly Commended at the University of Worcester’s inaugural Alumni Awards.

Roger Timbrell, who studied at the University from 1964 to 1967, was recognised in the Lifetime Achievement category for a distinguished career in education spanning decades and marked by innovation, community engagement and a commitment to helping students reach their full potential.

Roger, from Wolverhampton, completed a Certificate in Education, studying teaching theory and practice alongside Geography and History, as well as professional subjects including music and crafts such as pottery.

Throughout his career, he became known for developing forward-thinking approaches to teaching and learning. Among his achievements were the creation of pioneering multimedia libraries and resource centres in schools in Wolverhampton, helping to support more personalised approaches to education. He also championed the integration of practical fieldwork into the curriculum, developed strong links between schools and their local communities through community festivals, and introduced innovative ways to re-engage students who had become disengaged from education.

Reflecting on the impact his time at Worcester had on his professional life, Roger said the University helped shape both his outlook and ambitions as a teacher.

“It gave me a clear philosophy towards teaching and learning, confidence and a passion to make a difference to the lives of young people,” he said.

Speaking about being Highly Commended in the Lifetime Achievement category, Roger said: “I feel surprised and very honoured and proud.”

Roger, an active member of Tettenhall Rotary Club, also paid tribute to the lifelong friendship that led to his nomination, thanking Peter Elliot, who nominated him for the award after the pair first met as fellow students at Worcester.

“I was thrilled when Peter told me about his nomination and it meant a great deal to me that it was he who made it,” Roger said. “As well as studying Geography together, Peter and I ran the Geography Society for two years as Chairman and Secretary, and our friendship has endured ever since.”

The University of Worcester Alumni Awards celebrate graduates who have made outstanding contributions in their professions and communities.
