Jo Yapp
The Head Coach of the British and Irish Lions, Jo Yapp, has been recognised at the inaugural University of Worcester Alumni Awards, winning the Outstanding Sportsperson Award.
Jo, who studied Sports Studies and later completed a PGCE at the University of Worcester, was honoured for her outstanding contribution to rugby as both a player and coach, as well as her influential role in developing the next generation of female athletes.
After graduating, Jo spent five years working as a PE teacher before forging an illustrious career in rugby. She earned 70 caps for England, captained her country, and also represented England in rugby sevens.
Following her playing career, she moved into coaching, holding roles with the University of Exeter, Worcester Warriors and the Australian women’s national rugby union team, the Wallaroos, before being appointed Head of Women’s Pathway for the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and being selected to coach the British and Irish Lions in 2027.
Jo, who lives in south Shropshire, said: “I feel very proud to have been recognised, and I am grateful for the opportunities and support that have helped me achieve this.”
She added: “My training as a PE teacher, combined with the coaching modules I completed, provided a strong foundation and has been invaluable in supporting my career development.”
Jo said she remembers the people she studied alongside as one of the highlights of her time at the University.
Having excelled as both an elite athlete and coach, Jo’s career has been marked by a commitment to developing talent and advancing opportunities within women’s sport. Her award recognises a journey that has taken her from the lecture theatres and sports facilities of Worcester to the very highest levels of international rugby.
Thanking those who nominated her, Jo said: “I’m very grateful to those who took the time to nominate me. I don’t seek recognition, but it’s always nice to know that your efforts have made a positive impact and are appreciated by others. It’s a real honour to be recognised in this way.”
The inaugural University of Worcester Alumni Awards celebrate the achievements of graduates who are making a positive difference in their professions and communities.
