Brooke Evans
A Nurse who turned her own experience of serious illness into a career supporting others has been recognised at the University of Worcester ’s inaugural Alumni Awards.
Brooke Evans, who graduated from the University with a BSc in Adult Nursing in 2018, was named winner of the Social Impact for Healthcare Award, which celebrates alumni making a significant difference to health, wellbeing and access to care.
The Social Impact for Healthcare Award recognises individuals whose work improves health, wellbeing or access to care, celebrating those who make a measurable difference through healthcare delivery, innovation, advocacy or public health.
Speaking about receiving the award, Brooke, from Redditch, said: “I was very surprised. It’s a lovely award to win.”
Brooke was inspired to become a nurse following her own experiences. At the age of 17, she was diagnosed with leukaemia and spent eight months receiving treatment on the haematology wards at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. The care and compassion she received during that time inspired her to pursue a career in nursing.
After graduating from the University of Worcester, she returned to the very hospital where she had been treated, beginning her career as a haematology nurse and supporting patients facing the same condition she had overcome herself.
She has built a successful nursing career, progressing to become a Clinical Nurse Specialist and said the University provided the foundations for her professional journey.
“Worcester was a great foundation to moving onto my nursing career and gave me all the skills to progress as a nurse,” she said.
The University of Worcester Alumni Awards celebrate the achievements of graduates from across a wide range of sectors who are creating positive change in their professions and communities.
