Helen completed a BSc (2:1) in Animal and Plant Science at the University of Newcastle followed by an MSc (Distinction) in Environmental Archaeology at the University of Sheffield. She specialised in archaeobotany and worked for 6 years as an archaobotanist for the Universities of Sheffield, Nottingham and Leicester.
The research projects Helen worked on took her to Syria, Bulgaria, Greece and Egypt during this time (along with a number of co-publications). She also completed a PG Cert in Learning and Teaching and taught on some archaeobotany and research methods modules at both Sheffield and Leicester Universities.
Responsibilities
As Head of Doctoral Services, Helen has oversight of all research degree students, supervisors and programmes at the University and responsibility for the development and enhancement of all associated regulations and procedures associated with these programmes along with the development of new programmes.
A significant part of the role relates to student experience and she works closely with the Lecturer in Researcher Development. student reps, Academic Schools / Institute and University Services to ensure our research degree students are included in all University level developments.
Helen also has responsibility for the development of research degree supervisors and examiners and writes and delivers a number of workshops within the Research Supervisor Development Programme.
She also manages a team of 4 Research Degree Programme Officers in the Doctoral School Office who administer all our programmes (MRes, MPhil, PhD, Professional Doctorates) from Admission to Graduation.
