Researchers at the University of Worcester are appealing for people from farming backgrounds with experience of arthritis to take part in groundbreaking research into the condition.
The University is currently carrying out one of the first studies to directly ask farmers about their first-hand experiences of arthritis, funded by the Nuffield Foundation and Arthritis UK.
Dr Victoria Jones, Research Fellow at the University, said: “We’re looking for farmers and farm workers living with arthritis, whether that’s formally diagnosed or self-diagnosed, as well as family members who may be supporting someone with the condition.”
“We’re especially keen to hear from family members,” she added, “as they often help us reach farmers who might not otherwise come forward themselves.”
Participants will be visited by researchers at a time and place to suit them, where they’ll be asked about their experiences of farming with arthritis, and invited to share how the condition impacts their day-to-day lives.
This will help build up a clear image of how sufferers are currently managing their symptoms and inform support and preventative measures.
“Farming places very specific demands on the body and mind, so it’s vital that any future support is tailored to that reality,” said Dr Jones. “By taking part, people can help us build a clearer picture of the challenges farmers face, so those experiences can be shared with policymakers and the wider sector.”
The study has already been hearing from farmers who live with arthritis.
Dr Jones said: “Some make physical adjustments, like padding a tractor gear stick to improve grip, while others manage pain by taking frequent breaks or avoiding certain tasks altogether.”
She added: “Taking part in this research will give you the chance to be heard and share your experience, and it will also help shape the way farmers are impacted by the condition in the future. We’d really encourage anyone affected, or their family members, to get in touch and be part of the study.”
Participants should be over 18 years of age and live in Herefordshire or Worcestershire.
