Meet the team

You will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes academics as well as professional practitioners with educational experience from primary, secondary and special schools. Guest speakers are also invited in for lectures and seminars in at least once per module.



Teaching is informed by research and the majority of permanent lecturers have a higher education qualification or are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.

    Rebecca Foster MBE

    Rebecca has been teaching PE predominantly in the North of England for over 20 years. She was Head of PE of one of the first six Sports Colleges in the Country. After 7 years of teaching she backpacked the World and did some temporary teaching in Australia and South Africa. She now currently volunteers as Team Manager for UK Deaf Athletics and is currently the course leader for Physical Education and Senior Lecturer for Adaptive PE.

    Helen Hope

    Helen Hope is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education. Before joining the university she had taught in secondary schools for ten years and was Head of a PE department for five years. She has previously led the PGCE PE teacher training programme for three years before moving into teaching on the Undergraduate Modular Scheme course.

    Lerverne Barber

    Lerverne is Deputy Head and Principal Lecturer with responsibility for Learning, Teaching and Student Experience (including Recruitment, Retention and Achievement), within the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science (ISES). She is a member of the Senior Management Team in ISES and has been part of the Physical Education (PE) teaching team for more than ten years, having been PE Course Leader from 2008 - 2011.

    Vanessa Jones

    Vanessa Jones is an Associate Head  and member of the Senior Management Team for the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science.

    She is also currently engaged in writing chapters for the fifth edition of A Practical Guide to Teaching Physical Education in the Secondary School and the 6th edition Learning to teach Physical Education in the Secondary School: a practical companion.

    Rachael Bullingham

    Rachael is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and Course Leader of the Physical Education and Outdoor Education at the University of Worcester.  Rachael’s PhD analysed the experiences of openly lesbian athletes participating in team sports.  She has recently published ‘Out in Sport’ which offers an up to date examination of homophobia in sport.

    Charlotte Beaman-Evans

    Charlotte is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and the Sports Scholarship Coordinator at the University of Worcester. Before joining the University, she was previously a teacher of Physical Education in a secondary school. A keen sports player Charlotte has played a range of sports including rugby, football and hockey, achieving international status in Rugby.

    Polly Christian

    Polly’s background was as a School Sports Development Officer, with teaching responsibilities, under the previous School Sports Partnership framework. Polly facilitated the development of Physical Education and School Sport across 24 schools (primary and secondary education).

    Camilla is a performer, choreographer and dance teacher. She has performed professionally for many midlands based companies and now runs and performs with her own entertainment company. Alongside performing, Camilla has taught dance and gymnastics in primary, secondary and further education.

    Karen started at Worcester University in September 2016, after 9 ½ years working for The Youth Sport Trust as a Programme Manager for PE, where she led on developing and delivering resources, professional learning and materials to support both primary and secondary teachers of PE.

    Richard has 15 years’ experience teaching Physical Education and sport in the secondary and further education sectors.  He has a real passion for education and sport education in particular focussing on providing people with the skills and desire to be active and healthy for their entire lives. Richard enjoys participating and spectating almost every sport but in particular, rugby, triathlons and gymnastics.

Teaching and Assessment

How will you be taught?

The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement.  A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support through the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will enable you to flourish and be successful.


You are taught through a combination of:

  • Lectures and seminars (for a theoretical perspective on pedagogy)
  • Practical seminars (to apply theory within a practical setting)
  • Online learning (via Twitter, Blackboard, Camtasia, Pinterest)
  • Work Placements (teaching opportunities in local schools)  

You are taught through a combination of different teaching and learning styles to assist your own development of your pedagogical philosophy.  In most cases we try to create an interactive environment that allows you to comment and share your knowledge.  We encourage an applied approach from theory to practical application to develop your subject specific skills. During the course, you will be taught by an experienced and enthusiastic team of physical education practitioners who are committed to providing a quality experience that will enable you to become an effective and employable graduate.

In addition, meetings with personal academic tutors (PAT) are scheduled on at least 4 occasions in the first year and three occasions in each of the other years of a course. At the end of your first year you will be invited to discuss whether you wish to major, minor or remain as a joint student with your PAT.

You have an opportunity to undertake a semester long placement in the second year of the course. However, there are many additional opportunities for learning in an applied context in semester time as well as in Worcester Weeks.         

Contact time

In a typical week you will have around 12 – 16 contact hours of teaching.  The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and in the final year you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.

Typically class contact time will be structured around:

  • 4 - 6 hours of lectures (large group)
  • 5 - 7 hours of practical seminars of around 30-35 students
  • 4 hours of slectures (blend of lecture and seminar)  

In year two there are work placement opportunities in at least two modules (SPRT2011 and SPRT2042). In year three there is a paired work placement (SPRT3045).

Independent self-study

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 24-28 hours of personal self-study per week.  Typically, this will involve:

  • Completing directed study tasks
  • Engaging with online activities
  • Working on personal fitness
  • Practice / rehearsal
  • Reading, research and watching videos/TED talks
  • Working on individual and group projects
  • Preparing for assignments and learning experiences
  • Reflection and evaluation

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources.


The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or ‘formative’ assignments.  Each module has one or more formal or ‘summative’ assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.

The precise assessment requirements for an individual student in an academic year will vary according to the mandatory and optional modules taken, but a typical formal summative assessment pattern for each year of the course is:

You will receive feedback on practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback is intended to support learning and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate.

We aim to provide you with feedback on formal course work assessments within 20 working days of hand-in.



Where could it take you?


Due to the flexible nature of the course, students are able to develop specific areas of interest, experience new areas of study and build on their strengths whilst addressing areas of weakness in order that they achieve their full potential. Tutors are able to give students individualised advice on career pathways.

The PE degree course provides a sound basis for taking a PGCE teaching qualification. Students wishing to pursue a career in teaching should ensure they take the full range of PE modules available (secondary) and think carefully about options outside the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science if they wish to pursue primary.

Previous graduates have found employment in a variety of areas, including teaching, School sport premium initiatives, lecturing, the armed forces, public services, coaching, sports development managers, health promotion/ corporate fitness, sales, NHS activity co-ordinatiors, leisure and recreation management, personal fitness training, sports information analyst, performance analyst, sports marketing and events management.

PE graduates are also able to follow a variety of pathways into postgraduate level study including Masters degrees and PhD studies.

Full-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in the academic year 2018/19 will be £9,250 per year.
