Settling in as an International Student
Moving to a different country for education is an exciting and bold decision.
It can be quite daunting at times and it's completely normal to miss home. Almost everyone has moments where they miss their family, friends, favourite foods, or the familiarity of everyday life.
The first few weeks can feel overwhelming, but things do get easier with time.
One of the best things you can do is create a routine.
Whether it's going for a morning walk, making your favourite coffee, or setting aside time to call family each week, having familiar habits can make a new place feel more like home.
It's also important to put yourself out there, even if it feels a little uncomfortable at first.
Join societies, attend social events, or simply invite a classmate or colleague for a coffee. Building new friendships takes time, but having people around you makes a huge difference.
In my experience, regular video calls with family and friends can be comforting, but spending every spare moment looking back can make it harder to settle into your new surroundings. Give yourself permission to embrace the experience you're having now.
Take time to explore the UK as well, visit nearby towns, parks, museums, or local cafés.
Discovering new places can help you feel more connected to where you're living and gives you something exciting to look forward to on weekends.
Finally, be patient with yourself.
Adjusting to a new country doesn't happen overnight, and everyone experiences it differently. There will be good days and more challenging ones, but that's all part of the journey. Before long, the places that once felt unfamiliar will start to feel like home, and you'll look back proudly at how much you've grown.
If you're struggling, remember that you don't have to go through it alone.
Reach out to university support services, friends or placement supervisor. You can also talk it out with your family for gaining confidence and emotional support.
Asking for support is a positive step, and you'll often find that others have felt exactly the same way.
