Changing my course

When I chose my course for university I based it on what I enjoyed studying at A-level, which for me was Business.

During first year I enjoyed the majority of my modules. But as I started to get introduced to different aspects of business, I realised I was choosing all the optional modules which related to marketing, but my course was focused on accountancy and finance.

I did my research on the different Business courses the University offered, and found a marketing-based course with modules that could lead to career opportunities I had not previously thought about.

This made me certain that moving courses would help me get the most out of university.

How I changed my course

I contacted firstpoint who confirmed I was able to move courses and talked me through other potential options based on the modules I had already taken.

My next step was to contact the Course Lead of my course to request the change, as well as letting my Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) know so they could support me with my new modules and assessments.

I found the process was extremely easy, and the staff I spoke to were incredibly supportive!

From first reaching out to firstpoint, to being enrolled on the new course, the process took up to a week.

I moved courses halfway through my second year, and it turned out to be the right decision for me.

Now I was interested in all the modules and felt motivated to look for work experience in marketing to get more practical experience, and truly make the most out the of time I have left on the course.

Are you thinking about changing your course?

Based on my experience, my advice would be:

  • Always speak out if you're not happy or have questions about your course. Reach out to your to your PAT or firstpoint as soon as possible. They can listen, offer reassurance and talk through your options to help you make a decision.
  • Look ahead at the different modules you’ll take in the second and third years of your course to see what you’ll learn and what careers they could lead on to. If this doesn’t match with what you’re interested in, explore other courses to see if they could give you the learning opportunities you’re after.

Changing courses may feel like a big decision, but trust your gut and make the choice that’s best for you.
