Sophie Carrigill

A talented wheelchair basketball player, Sophie had risen rapidly through the ranks of Great Britain's women's team following a life-changing spinal injury sustained in a car accident in 2010. Her determination and leadership saw her appointed captain of the GB Women's team for the 2014 World Championships, before co-captaining the squad at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

That year, Great Britain achieved its highest-ever finish in the women's wheelchair basketball competition, reaching fourth place and establishing itself among the world's leading teams.

Since then, Sophie has remained at the forefront of international wheelchair basketball. She has represented Great Britain at three Paralympic Games, won medals at European and World Championship level, and has become a respected advocate for disability sport and inclusion.

Alongside her sporting career, Sophie has worked as an inspirational speaker, using her platform to encourage others to overcome challenges and pursue their ambitions.

Reflecting on the University's support for wheelchair basketball, Sophie has spoken of her affection for Worcester and the role it played in her journey, describing it as a city and community that gets behind the sport and its athletes.

Today, she continues to inspire others through her achievements on and off the court, demonstrating the resilience, leadership and determination that have defined her career.
