Jon Pickering is currently working as Lead Analyst with the West Bromwich Under-18s side, studied for a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Worcester, before going on to complete a MSc Applied Sports Performance Analysis.

“I would not be in my current role without the University,” he said. “During my course they provided me with the opportunity to undertake several work placements at elite clubs, an experience that strengthened my interest in the field. The course provided me with the technical skills and practical experience within the industry to be good at the job, and ultimately to pursue a career as an analyst.”

After completing his Master’s, Jon started his work with the Baggies as an Assistant Data Analyst to the first team in 2020, but quickly worked his way up to a Lead Analyst position, initially with the Under-16s Academy side, and latterly the Under-18s.

“We recently had a successful FA Youth Cup run to the semi-finals which was challenging, enthralling and an experience I won’t forget soon,” he said. “It is only the second time in the club's history they have reached this far. We beat Tottenham 5-0 away - an unbelievable night - and Everton. We eventually succumbed to Aston Villa who went on to win the tournament.”

Having made a successful start to his career, Jon has big plans for the future. “I want to ultimately develop myself and be the best version of me,” he said. “My ultimate target is to become a Lead Analyst for the first team with a Premier League or Championship club.”

And with determination and drive in abundance, few would bet against him. When the pandemic locked down elite sport for several months, Jon and many of his colleagues were placed on furlough, but with one eye on the future, he was keen not to waste this opportunity.

“I used the time as well as I could,” he said. “I tried to upskill myself with new software to better myself for my eventual return. I also started to learn German, something I still do every day as I can see myself working there one day. Although they were uncertain times, I was determined not to lose the time wasting away on my PS4.”
