Former Bewdley Sixth Form Student Graduates as Award-Winning Journalist
A former student of Bewdley School and Sixth Form has been recognised with a broadcasting award after producing a documentary exploring the growth of arts and theatre in Worcestershire.
Elliot Atkinson, 22, received the Natasha’s Voice Prize for Original Broadcast Journalism as he graduated from the University of Worcester with a degree in Journalism and Media & Culture.
Elliot, from Kidderminster, credits his time at Bewdley Sixth Form for his success at university: “My three A Levels all played an important role in my degree, as I could build and develop my knowledge gained at A Level into many aspects of my course.”
Explaining why he won the prize, Elliot said: “I created a mini documentary on the development and rise of theatre and the arts in Worcestershire. I visited and interviewed several people responsible for those venues that are up and coming in helping young people and the community engage with the arts.”
During his time at the University, Elliot took a year out of his studies to serve as Vice President Education at Worcester Students’ Union, having been elected by his fellow students.
Speaking about receiving the award, he said: “This award means the world to me. I didn’t know I was going to receive the award, so I was very surprised and humbled. I worked very hard on the documentary, so it feels amazing for my work to be recognised. I couldn’t have done it without my supervisor, who was outstanding throughout the whole process.”
Elliot hopes to pursue a career in teaching and believes his time at Worcester has improved his confidence.
“I have been able to explore themes and topics that will be useful to me in the future, such as neurodiversity and using music in my assignments, something that is a big part of my life now. It has also given me the ability to reach out to organisations and put myself out there, something I felt very nervous about prior to university.”
Elliot has graduated from the institution that has been named the Daily Mail University of the Year for Graduate Jobs 2027, and is the UK’s leading multi-subject university for sustained graduate employment, further study or both one year after graduation. He received his award and degree during a week of graduation ceremonies held at Worcester Cathedral.
Professor Sally Moyle, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Worcester said: “We’re incredibly proud of all of our graduates, especially those who have been recognised with awards for going above and beyond during their studies.”
“Winning an award like this is a great way for students to demonstrate to future employers the effort and commitment they have invested in their university experience. They can look back with pride on their outstanding achievements.”
