Thomas Morton has expertise in realist approaches to research, having worked on both realist review and realist evaluation projects in his role with the Association for Dementia Studies at the University of Worcester since 2018.
Thomas has taken a leading role in the planning, conducting and analysis phases of realist projects such as the Alzheimer’s Society-funded SCI-Dem realist review (2018-2020) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded Get Real with Meeting Centres realist evaluation (2021-2023) and Food Glorious Food realist evaluation (2024-2025).
In these projects Thomas was trained by, and worked alongside, Geoff Wong, an internationally recognised methodological expert in realist approaches who was involved in the development of RAMESES quality and reporting standards for realist research.
Thomas has extensive experience with a variety of qualitative data generation methods, including designing, conducting and analysing of face-to-face, online and telephone interviews, face-to-face and online focus groups, and ethnographic observation. He has also incorporated complementary forms of analysis into realist evaluation, such as thematic analysis and soft-systems methodology, and has experience with interpretative phenomenological analysis.
