Joe graduated with a Master of Pharmacy degree from Aston University in 2002. Having completed a pre-registration year in community pharmacy, he registered as a pharmacist in 2003. Joe worked in community pharmacy as a locum pharmacist from 2003 until 2008 whilst also undertaking a PhD investigating the developing role of the community pharmacist in public health. Upon completion of his PhD, he was appointed to an academic position at Aston University.
Joe worked at Aston for nearly 18 years and during this time held a variety of leadership positions including MPharm Programme Director, Associate Head of Pharmacy with responsibility for education and – during the last approximately 4 years of his time at Aston – Head/Dean of Aston Pharmacy School. In the summer of 2026, Joe joined the University of Worcester as a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy to help drive the development of the University’s new MPharm programme.

Teaching Interests
Joe’s teaching interests lie in public health, health policy, evidence-based practice and social pharmacy.
Research Interests
Joe’s research interests are focussed on the public health function of pharmacy and pharmacists, organisational structure and professionalism within community pharmacy, medication adherence, pharmacy education and service evaluation.
