Some of the region’s top employers attended the University of Worcester Careers Fair to connect with students and promote graduate career opportunities.
Held on campus by the University’s Business School, students were able to meet employers from the region to learn about graduate employment opportunities.
Recent graduate Harvey Dalloway attended the Careers Fair on behalf of his employer MiTek Industries, who he met at last year’s event while he was still a student at the University of Worcester.
“I was in the final year of my Computing degree,” explained Harvey. “I came to the Careers Fair and got chatting to the team from MiTek Industries. I told them about myself and they were really keen to hear about the projects I had been involved in. They told me all about their company and it just seemed perfect for me in terms of what they were doing, and what I want to do.”
Harvey continued: “When I saw they were hiring for a graduate role I went for it and it, I got the job, and here I am today.”
Harvey did a long placement with the NHS in the region as part of his course.
He said: “At Worcester there was a big careers focus, and the placement year put me in a really good position when I was applying for work because it is a tough market, but these things clearly do make a difference.”
Harvey said he was excited to come and be involved in the Careers Fair from an employer’s perspective: “Every exhibitor is here for a reason, they want to speak to students, and in our case the company has shown a really great interest in getting new talent in, so it really is valuable to make those connections.”
Olivia Williams, Business Development Officer at Worcester Business School, was one of the organisers of the careers fair.
She said: “There’s lots of variety, from technology companies such as QinetiQ and BetaDen to sustainability focussed organisations like Greener Options, as well as employers from the health and wellbeing sector.”
Olivia continued: “There’s also a really good mix of smaller and larger companies so our students can make meaningful connections with employers that are the right fit for them.”
The University of Worcester is the University of the Year for Graduate Jobs in the Daily Mail University Guide. Judges praised a performance by Worcester that ‘leaves many of the Russell Group in the shade’.
“The Careers Fair is a fantastic example of the way we embed employability into the students’ experience,” said Olivia. “They have the opportunity to speak to a host of different employers and it’s always wonderful to see those conversations developing into careers for graduates, as can be seen with Harvey.”
Oliver Davis, second-year Business Management student, attended the Careers Fair alongside his fellow students.
He said: “I think it’s great. It’s a wonderful opportunity for networking, especially for myself as I’m looking at doing a summer placement, so it’s incredibly useful.”
Oliver added: “I’ve met some people who are really knowledgeable in their fields, and there are lots of local opportunities here as well.”
