Sport and dementia

As part of the new collaboration between Association for Dementia Studies and the School of Sport & Exercise Science, we are developing expertise in sport and dementia.

Our aim is to make a substantial contribution to building evidence-based practical ways of working with people living with dementia and their families using sport.

There are two PhD studentships engaged in research that will enable people to live well with dementia.

Chris Russell’s research explores identity and social engagement within the sports, leisure and dementia context. Intended outcomes will improve sporting and leisure services and offer innovation to enhance care pathways.

Becky Oatley’s research explores dementia and sporting reminiscence, memory and nostalgia. The study will develop understanding of how reminiscence can improve community engagement for people living with dementia.
