Probation & Mentors
Probation & Mentors
Appointments into the University are made with a probationary period specified. The length of the probation varies according to the nature of the post.
It is recommended that new employees be assigned a mentor i.e. an existing employee who will provide advice and guidance during, at least, the inital probationary period. Everyone new to a post will be allocated a mentor by their line manager in order to help them settle quickly and happily into their role. The line manager should assign a mentor (ideally before the new employee starts) from the bank of trained mentors. An up-to-date list of trained mentors is available on O:All Staff Documents/Personnel/Mentoring documents.
The Personnel Department can give managers guidance on choosing an appropriate mentor.
