Maternity, Adoption & Paternity Leave

Maternity, Adoption & Paternity Leave

The guides below outline both the Statutory and Occupation entitlements for each specific type of leave, and the procedures to follow. It is recommended that contact be made with the Personnel Department for individual and up to date information.

New right to Additional Paternity Leave and Pay

This affects the parents of children with a due date, or in an adoption situation the notification or match date, on or after 3rd April 2011.  Essentially it allows the mother of a child to return to work without taking her full year's maternity leave, and "donate" the remainder of her leave entitlement to the child's father or her partner, who can then take up to 26 weeks off work to care for the child.  Additional paternity leave must be taken within 12 months from the date of the child's birth.  Salary may be replaced by statutory paternity pay for some of the additional paternity leave period if an employee is eligible to receive it; the remaining period of additional paternity leave is unpaid.

We are currently updating our guides and application forms to reflect these changes, and so in the meantime please contact the Personnel Department for more advice.
