Case Study: Will; Drama and Performance BA

Will based his decision to study Drama and Performance on details of the course in the university prospectus. To him, the opportunity to perform regularly and to go on a work placement in his final year seemed ideal. By concentrating on the practical elements of the course Will underestimated the amount of written work and reading that the course would demand. Will loved the performance aspect of the course and was also very active within the dance and drama societies in the Students' Union. The written work, however, was a different matter. Will found it difficult to motivate himself to study and felt that the grades he received for his work were not worth the effort or time. During semester two of his first year Will decided that he would leave university and look for a job. After talking to an Advisor he decided that rather than leave straight away he would wait until the end of his first year so that, provided he passed his modules, he would be eligible to leave with a Certificate of Higher Education. This achievement, along with his participation in the drama and dance societies would be something positive that he could put on his CV and would demonstrate, that despite leaving his course, he had not wasted his time and experience at university.
