Open Day travel discount FAQs

The University of Worcester has teamed up with West Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway and First Bus to offer you either one free train ticket (valid on West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway trains) or 25% off on up to two bus tickets (valid on First Bus Worcestershire County or Network day tickets) to help you get to and from our Open Days from September to December 2019.

We also provide free shuttle buses between The Hive, University Arena and St John’s Campus throughout the day, to make it as easy as possible for you to explore the University and the city while you’re here.

If you’re planning to travel by car, we offer free car parking on our St John’s Campus all day for Open Days. There’s no need to do anything beforehand to access the free car parking – simply turn up on the day and park in any car park for free.

Train travel discount

West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway are offering one free train ticket, valid on their trains, to help you get to our Open Days from September to December 2019.

How do I book my ticket?

When you book your place for any of our Open Days from September to December 2019, there will be an option to select your free train ticket. If you’ve already booked your place at an Open Day but haven’t yet selected the travel discount option, email study@worc.ac.uk or refer to your original booking email from the Open Day.

What routes are valid for this offer?

The ticket is valid on routes served by West Midlands Railway or London Northwestern Railway. Network maps are available for West Midlands Railway or London Northwestern Railway. Please be aware that other train providers may use the same routes.

How do I check if my journey is valid?

You can plan your journey using West Midlands Railway or London Northwestern Railway website. Enter the station you want to leave from and the station you want to go to (we recommend Worcester Foregate Street) and click ‘Find times and tickets’, you can then filter the results to ‘Our trains only’, which will show you only journeys provided by West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway. The email ticket you receive from us is a day pass, valid for outbound and return journeys.

If only part of my journey is valid, can I still get the discount?

You can still use the day pass for the part of your journey that operated by West Midlands Railway or London Northwestern Railway - you’ll just need to order and pay for the other part of your journey separately.

How long is the ticket valid for?

The train ticket is a day pass and will be valid all day for the day of the Open Day, so you can plan which trains you want to catch and when for both outbound and return journey.

How late can I book onto the Open Day to receive a free train ticket?

The train ticket offer is valid for all Open Days from September to December 2019. To receive your free train ticket you’ll need to book by 8am on the day of the Open Day, you will receive your ticket by email.

When will I receive my train ticket?

As long as you book by 8am on the day of the Open Day, we’ll send your train ticket to you by email, along with a programme for the day.

Can guests get a free ticket too?

West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway can only offer one free train ticket per booking for attending our Open Days. Your guests are not eligible for a free ticket.

However, if you have additional needs that require bringing a carer with you to the Open Day, please get in touch with us on 01905 855141 to organise for your carer to receive a ticket.

Which station do I need to arrive at for the Open Day?

There are two train stations in Worcester. We recommend you arrive at Worcester Foregate Street, located in the city centre, which is the nearest train station to our St John’s Campus, around a 25 minute walk. We’re providing a free minibus shuttle service from The Hive (located just down the road from Foregate Street) to the St John’s Campus.

Worcester Shrub Hill train station is around a 40 minute walk from St John’s Campus, or 10 minutes by taxi.

How will I receive my ticket?

Tickets will be emailed to you in the week of the Open Day. You’ll need to show your email ticket on your journey.

Bus travel discount

First Bus are offering 25% off on up to two bus tickets, valid on First Bus Worcestershire County or Network day tickets, to help you get to our Open Days from September to December 2019. Your First Bus ticket also allows travel on route 31 from Crowngate bus station to St John’s Campus.

How do I book my ticket?

Any journey that is covered by First Bus Worcestershire County or Network is valid for this offer.

How do I check if my journey is valid?

You’ll need to make sure the bus you are catching is First bus and that it is on Worcestershire County or Network day ticket. A network map is available.

If only part of my journey is valid, can I still get the discount?

You can still access 25% off up to two bus tickets for the part of the journey that is valid - you’ll just need to order and pay for the other part of your journey separately.

How long is the discount valid for?

The 25% discount code will be valid all day for the day of the Open Day, so you can plan which bus you want to catch and when.

How late can I book onto the open day to receive a 25% bus discount?

The train ticket offer is valid for all Open Days from September to December 2019. You need to book onto your chosen Open Days and select the 25% bus discount option at least five days before the Open Day takes place.

When will I receive my discount code?

You’ll receive a discount code from us via email and text message 3 days ahead of the Open Day you’re booked onto.

Can guests get the travel discount too?

First bus are offering up to two people 25% off each of their bus tickets, so if you bring one guest along, they’ll also be able to claim the discount. Please note that both you and your guest will have to separately download the First Bus app to activate the two discount codes we provide. Any other guests will need to pay the full price for their tickets.

Which stop do I need to get off at for the Open Day?

The Open Day is based at our St John’s Campus (WR2 6AJ). Crowngate Bus Station is the main terminal for all buses coming into Worcester. First’s journey planner allows you to plan your journey online. Your First bus ticket also allows travel on route 31 from Crowngate bus station directly to St John’s Campus. We’re also providing free minibus shuttles from The Hive (located next to Crowngate Bus Station) to the St John’s Campus.

How will I receive my discount code?
