Who can apply?
Our semester abroad scheme is open to current University of Worcester students who are interested in studying part of their degree in another country.
Exploring your options
You can visit the study abroad area in firstpoint to find information about potential host universities. You will choose 2 possible overseas Universities that teach modules related to your course. We also organise International Experience trips or events, to give you an opportunity to meet other students interested in studying abroad.
It will help to think about all aspects of your study abroad before you apply (how will your discipline be perceived abroad? will there be a different teaching style? Will you take up a new hobby or sport?)
Please make an appointment with the Exchange and Study Abroad Coordinator, Amanda Niedfeldt, at firstpoint to talk about your ideas.
How to apply
You can collect a semester abroad handbook and application form from firstpoint. Once you have submitted your application, we will invite you to attend an interview.
The interview will cover:
- your research into your study abroad options
- risk assessment
- adapting to an overseas university and different cultures.
If you pass the application stage, you will need to apply as an exchange student at your host university.
You will attend a departure session tailored to the region of your host university. You will meet organisations such as RED 24 and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, who are experts in travel security and support overseas. You will also cover important topics such as the University of Worcester’s insurance policy, risk assessment, cultural intelligence and culture shock.
You will explore real life case study material and receive a study abroad departure checklist to fill in. This checklist will cover elements of your study abroad that will help you succeed, stay safe and have a fulfilling experience. Completing this checklist is a mandatory requirement for all students undertaking a semester abroad. You must submit this checklist 4 weeks prior to departure.
