What makes Religion, Philosophy & Values in Education at Worcester special?

This course gives you the opportunity to examine these issues, and also to look at how education in different contexts helps children to form their views on the world.

At a time when acquiring religious literacy is universally important, this course will equip you to become a specialist teacher of Religious Education in schools, subject to further study, and the course also opens up a range of other graduate opportunities, including people-focused careers in the public, private and charity sectors.

Modules do therefore change periodically in the interests of keeping the course relevant and reflecting best practice. Teaching and Assessment

How will you be taught?

Teaching and Learning

The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement.  A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support through the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will enable you to flourish and be successful.


You are taught through a combination of interactive workshops, lectures, seminars and learning outside of the classroom. Interactive workshops take a variety of formats and are intended to enable the application of learning through discussion and small group activities.  Seminars enable the discussion and development of understanding of topics covered in lectures and undertaking visits will develop not only what we learn, but also where and why we learn.

In addition, meetings with personal academic tutors are scheduled on at least 4 occasions in the first year and three occasions in each of the other years of a course.

You have an opportunity to contribute to, and possibly lead, eLearning activities such as blogging, website design and other TEL initiatives.

Contact time

In a typical week you will have around 12-15 contact hours of teaching.  The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and in the final year, you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study. 

Typically, class contact time will be structured around:

  • 4-5 hours of taught lectures
  • 4-5 hours of seminars
  • 4-5 hours of interactive workshops and individual with a tutor.

Independent self-study

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 22-25 hours of personal self-study per week.  Typically, this will involve completing online activities, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library and online, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations.

A range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources, supports independent learning.  


The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or ‘formative’ assignments.  Each module has one or more formal or ‘summative’ assessments, which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.  

Assessment methods include coursework such as essays, reports, portfolios, reflective journals, presentations and a final year independent studies project.


You will receive feedback on practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback will support your learning and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate.

We aim to provide you with feedback on formal course work assessments within 20 working days of hand-in.

Meet the team


You will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes Rebecca Davidge, Chris Owens and Professor Stephen Parker (for the RPVE modules) and Ellie Hill and Dr Philip Woodward (for the Ed Studies modules).

    Rebecca Davidge

    Rebecca has 21 years’ teaching experience across a range of Secondary schools in the West Midlands. She has taught across a range of Humanities subjects, and her main expertise is in Religious Education, Ethics and Philosophy.

    Rebecca is interested in showing how religion influences individuals, culture and attitudes in 21st Century UK and exploring the place of RE in school curriculums. She is also involved in Holocaust Education and is particularly interested in research in this area.

    Rebecca is Subject Tutor for the PGCE Secondary RE course and takes an active interest in the progress of all her students, during their training and beyond as they begin their career.

If you gain a 2:1 degree or above you will be guaranteed an interview for teacher training at Worcester (primary, or secondary RE, subject to places being available), providing you meet the national pre-requisites for the course at the time of applying. How much will it cost?

Full-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in the academic year 2019/20 will be £9,250 per year.

The standard tuition fees for part-time UK and EU students registering on this course in the academic year 2019/20 will be £1,156 per 15-credit module, £1,542 per 20 credit module and £2,313 per 30-credit module.

Additional costs

Every course has day-to-day costs for basic books, stationery, printing and photocopying.  The amounts vary between courses.

If you choose to take our optional work experience module you will be expected to cover any travel costs, and the cost of DBS check (currently £44) if required by the placement setting.

There will be the opportunity to attend various trips, these are optional and you will be expected to pay any costs.
