The finals of English basketball’s oldest competition will take place at the University of Worcester Arena next weekend.
The men’s and women’s 2014 Sportscover National Cup Finals will be held back-to-back on Sunday January 26, giving basketball fans the chance to enjoy an afternoon of high-quality action at what the sport’s national governing body has dubbed one of the ‘best basketball arenas in the country’.
The cup competition is open to teams from the English Basketball League – the tier directly below the British Basketball League, the professional league which the Worcester Wolves currently top – and is held annually.
This year, the University Arena will host the women’s final, between Team Northumbria and Cardiff Archers, prior to the men’s final, which will pit the Reading Rockets against the Newham Neptunes.
Graham Blankley, England Basketball’s Events Officer, says: “England Basketball is looking forward to staging one of the most prestigious of our events at the new University of Worcester Arena, which is a perfect venue for the oldest competition in the English basketball calendar.
“It is one of the best basketball arenas in the country and we are looking forward to holding many more national events there in years to come.”
April White, Project Co-ordinator at the University of Worcester Arena, adds: “Basketball at the University Arena has proved extremely popular with the people of Worcester since the venue opened, with huge crowds turning out to cheer on the Worcester Wolves.
“We are sure that the city’s sports fans will welcome the opportunity to watch even more top quality sport, and we look forward to welcoming England Basketball and the Sportscover National Cup finalists to the University Arena next weekend.”
Doors open on January 26 at 12noon, with the women’s final beginning at 1pm. Tip-off in the men’s final is at 3.30pm.
