A world-renowned basketball coach has become the UK’s first Visiting Fellow in Basketball at the University of Worcester.

The University is recognised as one of Europe’s strongest in terms of the academic and playing disciplines of basketball.

Dr Alejandro Vaquera, whose profile includes experience as the strength and conditioning coach for a range of Spanish national teams and ACB and LEB league teams, joins the University to work in the Institute of Sport & Exercise Science.

Dr Vaquera said: “I am thrilled to be joining the team at the University of Worcester and to be part of an exciting European partnership in basketball.”

Dr Vaquera will remain in post as Director of Sport at Leon University in Spain and combine focussed visits to work with the University of Worcester in a range of teaching projects including the MSc degree in Sport and Exercise Science and the MSc in Basketball coaching Science.

The experience that Dr Vaquera brings from working with elite teams will be used when working alongside the University’s Director of Basketball, Paul James, with the expanding Worcester Wolves and university playing programme, and he will also link up with the University’s recently appointed strength and conditioning mentor, Marc Scriven.

Head of institute of sport and Exercise Science, Mick Donovan, said: “This is clearly an exciting appointment for the University and we are clearly familiar with the expertise that Alejandro brings. This is an innovative post that will help to raise the bar in both playing and academic disciplines.”
