A University of Worcester student is putting her writing skills to good use, putting together useful articles and information for thousands of other students across the UK.
Sophie Howard, who is studying Media and Cultural Studies at the University, is a regular contributor to My Student Style, a website run by students for students.
Sophie began writing for the website in July, following the completion of the second year of her degree, with her very first offering securing her the site’s Article of the Week award.
She explains: “I began writing for the website in July, and I am aiming to write one article a week whilst my university workload is lower. The article that won the Article of the Week prize was about Fresher’s Week, and I thought it was something that would interest new students.
“I never thought of writing or reporting as a career option before, which is why I chose to study a broad degree like Media and Cultural Studies, with lots of subject areas. However, I have always liked writing and I am really enjoying writing for a student publication. It’s new and exciting, and I now feel that journalism or writing for a magazine is something I want to look into after I graduate.”
Sophie will return to the University for her final year in September, and she believes that the work experience she is gaining writing for My Student Style will prove invaluable in the next twelve months and beyond.
“In any area of media, work experience is essential. Now I am beginning to build up a portfolio of work that I’m proud of, and it is giving me valuable skills and the opportunity to do something I enjoy.
“I have had a blast at the University of Worcester so far; I have really enjoyed my time here and I am looking forward to my third year.”
