Paul James' career in basketball started as a professional player for his hometown team Leicester All-Stars. He made his league debut on 26th September 1981, weeks after his 17th birthday, against local rivals Nottingham. He enjoyed seven successful years at the All-Stars (now known as Riders) before moving south to sign for the Bracknell Tigers in 1988.
After nine years as a player with the Tigers, Paul was appointed Head Coach in 1997, a position that he successfully retained until May 2005 winning many British Basketball League (BBL) competitions along the way. That summer, the Guildford Heat was founded by Paul and a few dedicated Tigers supporters; the Heat took its place in the BBL and Paul was appointed Head Coach. In just three seasons, he led the new franchise to success in every domestic competition. In 2007/2008 they also represented British Basketball at international level by competing in one of Europe’s most prestigious competitions, the Union of European Leagues of Basketball (ULEB) Cup.
As a Level Three Advanced Coach, Paul has been involved throughout his career in the development of British players, from grass roots level in schools and club/community programmes. It has always been an objective of his to actively play British players in his BBL teams whenever possible. Alongside this, he has been involved as a player and coach with England Basketball at all international levels.
In December 2009 Paul was appointed Head coach of the Worcester Wolves Basketball Club and in the summer of 2012 appointed England Senior Men Head Basketball Coach. In February 2012 he was appointed University of Worcester Director of Basketball, overseeing all areas of basketball development at the University.
