Before coming to Worcester, Joy taught on the PGCE English programme and the Education Studies course at the University of Birmingham for eight years. Previous to this she taught in a number of Birmingham schools, taking various posts of responsibility and leadership roles including that of Deputy Head. During her time in schools she worked closely with the Birmingham English LA team and helped to deliver courses to primary teachers. In addition she worked with Westhill College of Education to support the training of primary teachers both through taught courses and on school experience. This led to a desire to become more directly involved in the training of primary teachers and Joy then moved to the University of Birmingham. She has been a member of the Primary English team at Worcester since 2003 as well as being part of the Primary Partnership team responsible for placements up until 2011. Joy is currently joint PGCE primary English module leader teaching on primary English modules for both undergraduate and post-graduate students and supervising research dissertations in the subject.

Joy is currently a member of the Primary English team and teaches on the PGCE Primary English course as well as supervising trainees in schools.
