On Tuesday 16th May one hundred Primary education students and twenty Secondary English trainee teachers from the Institute of Education attended the 2nd annual Primary and Secondary Reading conference.

Keynote speakers included Dr Janet Evans, presenting on critical responses to visual texts and best-selling children’s author Tracey Corderoy, talking through the writing process and her life as an author.

Trainees had the opportunity to choose from twelve workshops delivered by experts from schools and national subject associations, designed to enhance subject knowledge across all key stages.

These included: the use of non-fiction film; implementing Chatterbooks projects in school; supporting EAL readers; and developing subject knowledge in grammar.

One of the highlights of the day was a workshop delivered by pupils from Bishop Milner School entitled Running a Reading Group: how to harness pupils’ interest.
