The Infirmary Medical Museum will join museums and galleries across the UK and Europe later this month for the first ever Museum Week, a social media project that will connect people to artwork, culture, history and science in new and interactive ways.
The Infirmary, the interactive museum situated at the University of Worcester’s City Campus on the site of one of the country’s oldest infirmaries, already uses social media channels such as twitter and Facebook to promote its events and exhibitions.
However, Museum Week – which will take place between March 24 and 30 – will give twitter users direct and unparalleled access to the Infirmary, as well as some of Europe’s leading museums and the people behind them, in 140-character bursts.
The Infirmary (using the @InfirmaryWorc twitter handle) will join other UK organisations already signed up, including the Science Museum (@sciencemuseum), the Natural History Museum (@NHM_London), the Victoria and Albert Museum (@V_and_A), the British Museum (@britishmuseum), Eureka! The National Children’s Museum (@eurekamuseum) and the Tate (@Tate).
The participating venues will be using the hashtag #museumweek in their tweets for the week, meaning users can follow the events on twitter. Each day will have a different theme, including #museumselfies, #askthecurator and #museummemories.
The Infirmary’s Kerry Whitehouse, says: “This is a great way of using social media to get people talking about museums, what they have to offer, and engaging people with their individual collections.”
Mar Dixon, an expert in social media and museums and host of the Culture Themes project, adds: “Every day of the year, museums and cultural institutions across the world are using twitter in exciting and interesting ways to tell the stories of their collections to new audiences.
“Museum Week will shine a light on these activities, giving a real-time glimpse into the workings of museums across the UK and Europe, 140 characters at a time.”
