Great Britain women’s basketball captain Stef Collins has praised the Worcester crowd after a fantastic final quarter saw the home side open their Eurobasket 2015 qualifying campaign with a hard-fought win over Belgium at the University Arena.
Great Britain had looked in complete control as they opened up a ten-point lead midway through the second quarter, but the talented young Belgian side fought back to take a single point advantage into the final ten minutes.
However, lifted by the increasingly vocal crowd, Great Britain finished the game strongly, restricting the Belgians to just two points in the final quarter to wrap up a 56-49 victory.
Afterwards, Collins said: "It was a great start to our qualifying campaign - it's always good to get the first game at home and we had a wonderful crowd and a great atmosphere here today.
"We're used to being based down in Surrey, but it's been a nice change to come up here to the University of Worcester. We're really enjoying the facilities at the University Arena and I think the crowd did a fantastic job in getting behind us during the game."
Collins and her team-mates now face three away games in the space of eleven days before they return to Worcester to conclude their qualifying campaign with fixtures against FYR Macedonia (June 22) and Lithuania (June 25).
The winners of the four-team group are guaranteed their place in the Eurobasket finals - the showpiece event in European basketball; to be jointly held in Romania and Hungary next year - and Collins is hopeful that the remaining two home games will again pull in an enthusiastic audience.
"This victory sets us up nicely for our eleven days on the road. We have three away games in a row, then we get to finish off here, so hopefully the fans enjoying themselves today and will be back to support us again," she added.
