I joined Gloucestershire Ambulance Service in 1994 as an Ambulance Technician, and completed my paramedic training in 2000. Since then I have worked as a HEMS Paramedic for just under 3 years, and was also part of the first cohort of Emergency Care Practitioners for the Trust. I completed my BSc as part of my training, and have worked in specialist/advanced practice ever since. Before joining the University of Worcester, I was the Specialist Paramedic Operations Manager for Gloucestershire, Avon and Wiltshire, and oversaw day-to-day matters including developing policy changes and new working practices. I also helped deliver training and clinical skills updates to my staff in these areas.

Teaching & Research

Teaching & Research

I am really interested in advanced practice - the patient assessment and associated clinical decision-making. These skills can help paramedics conduct a holistic assessment of a patient and, where appropriate, manage the patient using alternative pathways:

  • direct referral to hospital specialties (medical, surgical, paediatrics, oncology etc)
  • providing the patient with the medication at the time of assessment vis PGDs or, in the near future, through prescribing

This will not only prevent patients waiting in Accident & Emergency unnecessarily, but also provide a better patient experience.
