This programme will support participants located within early childhood in applying their skills to aspects of quality enhancement in staff or in settings.

This course is designed for the following groups:

  • Practice Mentor Tutors supporting work-based learning and professional development of Foundation Degree students
  • Mentor teachers supporting Foundation Stage Provision in Early Years Settings
  • Development Officers supporting quality provision in the Early Years
  • NQT Mentors providing a monitoring role for the professional development of staff or another Mentor Tutor role in the early years

Either a first or second-class Honours Degree or evidence of equivalent professional experience and achievement.

What will you study?


Understanding Mentoring in Early Childhood
The move to more work based training has raised the importance of the role of those who work with students from that of supervisor to mentor. This module will promote the development of skills and critical understanding relevant to those undertaking the mentor tutoring of practitioners within early childhood settings. Module participants will be required to reflect critically upon the processes involved in mentor tutoring in an early childhood context.

Mentoring Skills and Quality Enhancement in Early Childhood
This module will deepen students understanding of the role of the mentor tutor. As well as extending and enhancing their mentor tutoring skills and abilities the module will support the student in applying their skills to other aspects of quality enhancement in staff or in settings, for example staff development or performance management. In particular the module will focus on developing the mentor tutor’s ability to act independently to support professional development both within and beyond the current frameworks for staff development.

All modules are supported through taught sessions and are assessed through a 3,000 word assignment.


Where could it take you?


The Postgraduate Certificate provides a strong foundation for those wishing to develop their professional mentoring skills further. It also provides excellent professional development for those taking on leadership and management roles.
