You will learn how to

This course will equip you with both the analytical problem solving skills of the mathematician and a critical understanding of the field of education and the various approaches and debates that characterise the field in contemporary society.

You will benefit from the formal and rigorous approach of mathematics and from the opportunity to explore some of the historical, social, political and psychological ideas and theories that inform the practice of education in a range of settings. This will allow you consider what best practice might look like with regard to teaching and learning and curriculum development with regard to mathematics.

Teaching approach

The first year mathematics module start with ‘transition’ material aimed at providing a solid base for your three year study of mathematics. Similarly, the Year 1 education modules cover core aspects of the subject and explore the practice of education in a range of contexts.

In both subjects there is a gradual move through the three years from fundamental processes to the application of knowledge and understanding to address issues of real importance in modern society.


Mathematical skills and knowledge are seen as being of key importance at every level of the education system, from Early Years through to Further and Higher Education and the Life Long Learning Sector.

Skilled educators with sound mathematical knowledge are highly sought after on both post graduate teaching programmes and on the job training programmes. These aptitudes are also valued by employers in a wider range of fields other than purely educational.
