University Tutor (Teaching) in Paramedic Science

The 3/2 year full time programme and 32 week conversion course will provide the student with a qualification enabling them to apply for registration as a paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Responsibilities within this post will include liaison with sponsoring organisations to arrange placements, oversight of practice placements and student recruitment and selection. In addition, the post holder will be expected to play an active role in learning and teaching developments and module/course leadership within the paramedic science provision and within the wider Institute, which may include involvement in the delivery of CPD activity across a range of programmes. All staff are expected to engage in scholarly activity and higher study to enhance their own professional and academic development.

Selection process:

Short-listed candidates invited to interview will be asked to deliver a 20 minute teaching session on a relevant clinical topic that could be delivered to a level 5 paramedic student, for example: Advanced respiratory management of an adult patient .

The Chair of this group will provide feedback on the presentation to the interview panel.

The post sits within the Department of Allied Health and Social Sciences, which is one of three Departments within the Institute of Health & Society. The other two Departments are: Nursing and Midwifery and Psychology. The Institute offers courses ranging from foundation degrees in various specialties to undergraduate, Masters and PhD level study in a number of disciplines. The Paramedic team work as part of a multi-professional team contributing across the Institute to a number of professional programmes to include: Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Midwifery, Physician Associate, Advanced Clinical Practice and Social Work.



Main duties

Main duties

1. To undertake teaching at under-graduate and post-graduate level and to a wide range of students including practical teaching and assessment as required.

2. To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of student work (theoretical and practical), individually or collectively as part of a module team in accordance with quality assurance procedures.

3. To design and develop innovative and inspiring learning materials and assessments.

4. To engage in scholarly activity and staff development to ensure currency of teaching and professional re-validation.

5. To advise the Head of Academic Department and Course Team on the academic content and development of modules and the course.

6. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the Institute and University.

7. To work in partnership with Ambulance Services and other Partner organisations in respect of managing work-based learning placements.

8. To oversee work-based learning placements and provide on-going student support.

9. To act as a Personal Academic Tutor to undergraduate paramedic students.

10. To participate in recruitment and selection activities.

11. To undertake tutorial responsibilities, including maintaining records, for a group and/or individual students as required in order to support students to:

i. Optimise their learning opportunities and career progression

ii. Monitor their progress, deal with difficulties and enable them to develop the skills to do this for themselves.

12. To undertake any other reasonable duties requested by the Head of Department or his nominee.

Essential Criteria

1. Evidence of First Degree in a relevant subject area.

2. HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) or NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) registered professional or equivalence.

3. Up to date knowledge, experience and expertise in pre-hospital emergency care.

4. Effective partnership working with large complex organizations.

5. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a range of people including students, tutors, managers, representatives of external organizations and the public, both orally and in writing.

6. Effective team working and inter-personal skills.

7. ICT competence for teaching and administration purposes.

8. Evidence of engaging in the education process of students.

9. Evidence of on-going CPD and scholarly activity consistent with career stage.

Desirable Criteria

1. Higher degree.

2. Teaching qualification or HEA membership.

3. Mentorship qualification or equivalent.

4. Higher Education teaching experience.

5. Teaching qualification or HEA Fellowship*.

*Newly appointed staff who do not already hold HEA professional recognition or a HE teaching qualification, will be required to achieve this within three years of their appointment to the post, either through completion of the PG Cert Learning and Teaching in HE, or for those with significant experience of teaching in HE, via the University’s accredited CPD scheme conferring Fellowship at the appropriate level.
