Professional Doctorate and MRes Programmes Administrator

The post holder will be based in the Research School and work closely with the Research School Manager and other members of the Research School Team to provide administrative support for the Professional Doctorate and Masters by Research (MRes) programmes along with other research related activities co-ordinated through the Research School.

Research at the University of Worcester has grown significantly over the last 10 years. This growth is most clearly shown in the outcomes of the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF 2014). Worcester was the most improved University in the UK based on Research Fortnight’s “Research Power” measure, reflecting a more than four-fold increase in the number of staff submitted compared to RAE 2008 and a commensurate increase in the quality of the research. As a consequence of its REF 2014 submission, Worcester’s QR income for 2015-16 went up by 341% from 2014-15.

The University is committed to further developing its research profile in the coming period. It continues to provide a robust infrastructure for research. It has a well-established Research School which provides physical space for the University’s growing research student body, manages its research degree programmes and provides day-to-day support for the research students and their supervisors. The School also coordinates researcher development for research students and academic and research staff.

Main duties

Main duties

Administrative support for research degree programmes

1) To carry out the administration and monitoring of all students registered on a MRes or Professional Doctorate programme including the production of reports for the University’s Research Degrees Board.

2) To administer the taught programme for the MRes and Professional Doctorate programmes, including updating course handbooks and Blackboard pages, booking rooms for teaching, ensuring all students are on the appropriate modules, co-ordinating the submission of work etc.

3) To administer the annual electronic re-enrolment of MRes and Professional Doctorate students.

4) To act as secretary for the MRes and Professional Doctorate course committees.

5) To organise an annual student conference for the Professional Doctorate programme. 

6) To administer the exam boards for the MRes and Professional Doctorate programmes.

7) To co-ordinate the annual interviews for Professional Doctorate students.

8) To arrange and co-ordinate Professional Doctorate vivas (oral examinations) and to co-ordinate amendments following the viva. 

9) To advise external and internal examiners, independent chairs and members of Research Degrees Board on the research degree regulations and procedures pertaining to the MRes and Professional Doctorate Programmes.

10) To liaise with the Examinations Officer, of the graduation arrangements for all MRes and Professional Doctorate graduates.

Budget Administration

1) To administer the expenses budgets for all funded research degree students.

2) To administer the Research Student Support Scheme budget.

3) To organise and attend monthly budget meetings with the Research School Manager and DPVC Research.

4) To arrange ordering, payment and receipt of goods and services in conjunction with Finance as required by the Research @ Worcester and the research students.

General Administrative support

1) To organise all Research School meetings.

2) To organise all the training and materials for sessions that are run by the RS Manager.

3) To assist the RS Manager by providing data on student numbers, activity etc for reports throughout the year.

4) To provide assistance as required to the Research School Manager.

1) To represent the University at national events and meetings, as directed by the Research School Manager.

2) To assist in the organisation, maintenance and development of the service’s administrative and record keeping systems.

Essential Criteria

1. Education degree level or equivalent standard.

2. Excellent administration skills.

3. Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

4. Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate working with a wide range of people both from within the University and externally.

5. Good IT skills including knowledge of MS Office applications, especially Word and Excel.

6. Experience of using and maintaining information on a large database.

7. Experience of using electronic purchasing systems.

8. Experience of minute-taking.

9. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload, to cope with interruptions and work effectively to deadlines.

10. Ability to handle information of a confidential nature in accordance with current Data Protection legislation.


Desirable Criteria

1. Experience of working in a Higher Education institution

2. Experience of using SITS student database.
