Sir Michael Perry

One of the Country’s leading businessmen received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Worcester in 2012.

Sir Michael Perry has served as Chairman of the Leverhulme Trust and the Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust since 2008.

Having been educated on the Isle of Man and at St John’s College, Oxford, Sir Michael completed his national service in the Royal Navy before joining Unilever Ltd as a Management Trainee in 1957.

He retired from Unilever, after 39 years of continuous employment, having served from 1992-1996 as Chairman of Unilever Plc and Vice Chairman of Unilever NV.

Since his retirement he has served as Chairman of Centrica Plc (1997-2004), Chairman of Dunlop Slazenger Group Ltd (1996- 2001) and Deputy Chairman of Bass Plc (1996-2001). He served as a non-executive director of Marks & Spencer Plc (1996-2001) and Royal Ahold BV (1997-2004); since 2005 he has served as a director of Singapore Technologies Telemedia Pte Ltd.

Sir Michael has served as a member of the British Overseas Trade Board, the Netherlands British Chamber of Commerce, the Japan Trade Group, Senior Salaries Review Body, Marketing Council, the Shakespeare’s Globe Trust, the Advertising Association of which he was President, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Anglo Netherlands Society.

Since retiring to Worcester, Sir Michael has made an outstanding contribution to the educational and cultural life of the region, including service as a governor of Cheltenham College, Alice Ottley School, as a director of the Three Choirs Festival Association, and Chairman of the Worcester Three Choirs Festival.

Sir Michael was awarded the OBE in 1978, the CBE in 1990, Knight Bachelor in 1994 and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 2002. He has received honorary awards from South Bank University, Brunel University and Cranfield University and is an honorary Fellow of St John’s College, Oxford.
