The Project

The Infirmary is a collaboration between the University of Worcester and the Charles Hastings Education Centre (CHEC). George Marshall Medical Museum (GMMM) is run by CHEC, an educational charity whose purpose is the advancement of education in matters relating to medicine and healthcare.

The Infirmary is the successful culmination of a three and a half year Heritage Lottery Fund project with the collaborators. In addition to the 21st century exhibition three community projects were delivered and connections made with local and regional schools, resulting in over 100 education sessions delivered and a loyal group of volunteers and visitors have been established for future projects. Educational provision contributes to an understanding of History, STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and PHSE (Personal, Health and Social Education) in particular. 

The Infirmary opened in 2012 and is an interactive, educational museum gallery space in the Georgian former Worcester Royal Infirmary, where the British Medical Association was founded in 1832, and which is now the centrepiece of the city centre university campus developed by the University of Worcester. The building is listed Grade II. 

The University’s Business School, a café and a joint NHS/University Wellbeing Centre occupy parts of the old Worcester Royal Infirmary building. The former hospital’s ceremonial rooms – the chapel, the boardroom where the British Medical Association was founded and the entrance hall – are open, giving public access to this previous hospital that features so strongly in the life stories of people in Worcester and its surroundings. 

The museum displays tell the stories of healthcare in the city and explore current health topics in a sensitive way, providing opportunities for people to be involved in the creation of temporary exhibitions and activities inspired by the collections. It meets the needs of both school and university students through curriculum-based education sessions in the form of workshops, tours and handling sessions. Informal education opportunities are also offered to wider community groups and local community through a public events programme and by appointment. The Post

It is a part-time post for 2 days a week. The post holder will train, recruit, develop, and manage a team of ambassadors employed under the University of Worcester's Student Ambassadors scheme. Ambassadors will deliver existing education service to audiences in formal learning Key Stage 1 – 5 in primary and secondary schools and further education establishments. Informal sessions and tours will be delivered to community groups. The post holder will market the educational sessions and manage the bookings, ambassadors and the evaluation of them. Education services will include workshops for education groups, community groups, object handling boxes and presentations and the post holder will be expected to deliver sessions when needed. Hours of work are flexible and will need to adapt to the demands. 

The post holder will work closely with the Curator of the George Marshall Medical Museum and the Head of The Infirmary.

Main duties

Main duties

1. To manage ambassadors to deliver high quality hands-on education sessions for students of Key Stage 1-5 on STEM, PHSE and other relevant themes emanating from GMMM collection, GMMM and The Infirmary (TI) exhibitions and in future another heritage partner. 

2. To manage up to 10 ambassadors in their training, recruitment, evaluation and performance to deliver a variety of educational workshops to Key Stage 1-5 students and community-focussed content to community groups. 

3. To build upon existing relationships with schools and community groups to market sessions from GMMM and TI - adding another heritage partner in future - to target audiences under agreed objectives. Such tasks as designing marketing material will be included and supported by UW and museum colleagues. 

4. To devise and deliver training in workshops to ambassadors to provide required content knowledge and workshop delivery skills. 

5. To keep up to date with education offerings from local heritage partners. 

6. To keep up to date with theory and practice as relevant to the National Curriculum and topics and themes covered by GMMM and TI. 

7. To recruit and appoint ambassadors to teams suitable for the delivery of education and community sessions. 

8. To maintain the processes for marketing, booking, recording and evaluating sessions, for the allocation of ambassadors, high quality of service and measurement of success. 

9. To market the sessions offered by the GMMM and TI (Year one) and another heritage partner (when agreed) to local and regional schools, further education institutions and community groups under agreed objectives. 

10. To create, refine and deliver workshops for higher education institutions with partnership of GMMM, TI and another heritage partner (Year two), as required. 

11. To manage budgets for income and expenditure of project. 

12. To complete risk assessments for all sessions delivered. 

13. To maintain systems to monitor the involvement of ambassadors to ensure equitable allocation of workshops among them. 

14. To maintain systems to monitor and manage the quality of sessions through survey, observations and feedback from ambassadors. 

15. To maintain knowledge of education material relating to STEM, PHSE, National Curriculum and history up to date and relevant.

16. To create content on the project, achievements, opportunities and experiences for various social media platforms and the website. 

17. To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the line manager.

Essential Criteria: 

1. Demonstrable experience of organisational skills, public speaking abilities and understanding of science and history based topics. 

2. Relevant experience of developing and running learning programmes, working with range of audiences including Key Stage 1-5 and community groups. 

3. Professional knowledge and understanding of the potential of object based learning within formal and informal education frameworks. 

4. Experience of delivering training to a wide range of audiences. 

5. Proven ability to work effectively within a team across multiple venues. 

6. Management of small team of staff or volunteers. 

7. Organised approach to part time working and balancing deadlines in limited attendance. 

8. Planned approach to marketing the product of formal and informal learning to all audience groups, focus being Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5. 

9. Proven experience in marketing, leading to positive outcomes. 

10. Proven ability to devise and operate suitable processes to set targets, record outputs and outcomes and evaluate results. 

11. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide variety of people both orally and in writing. Particularly communicating effectively with teachers and pupils, as well as a strong awareness of the needs of customers. 

12. Strong interest in interpreting science, technology, engineering and maths in relation to medical instruments and social history. 

13. Excellent IT skills and experience of using Microsoft Office package or similar.

Desirable Criteria: 

1. An in-depth knowledge of the National Curriculum and other statutory education requirements across Key Stages 1-5. 

2. Experience of leading education workshops in museum setting and appreciation of the power of using objects in education. 

Physical requirements: This role requires some light manual tasks such as moving and handling objects.
