Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing (Fixed Term)

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic lecturer to join the Institute of Humanities to play a key role in the delivery of our popular Creative and Professional Writing programme.

The post provides an opportunity for a professional writer with experience of teaching at a university to join our growing, wider writing provision across the University. The successful candidate will have the capacity to contribute to current undergraduate teaching in Creative & Professional Writing, offer an established specialism in an area of creative writing, have expertise in theories of writing and be able to teach the application of critical theory to a variety of creative and professional writing contexts. 

The post holder will provide expert teaching in a range of modes, including writing workshops, tutorials and online interaction; s/he will facilitate student work in a range of different media and there will be the opportunity to make a substantial contribution to curriculum design. 

Worcester’s Institute of Humanities encompasses a broad range of disciplines and the successful candidate will play an active role in development of its increasingly interdisciplinary approach. 

Selection Process:

Short-listed candidates invited to interview will be asked to deliver a 15-minute teaching session (followed by 5 minutes of questions). The teaching session should be pitched at level 5. Candidates will be advised of the topic. The session will be delivered to a small panel of academics and students. The Chair of this group will provide feedback on the presentation to the interview panel.

Creative & Professional Writing currently forms part of the Department of English, Media and Culture (one of the two Institute of Humanities academic Departments, operating alongside, and in co-operation with, the Department of History, Politics & Sociology). Joint Honours Creative & Professional Writing can be studied currently in combination with a number of other subjects across the University including English, Screenwriting and Illustration.

The University of Worcester maintains an ambitious programme of expansion, with media, the arts and writing developing as key growth areas. This post consequently provides an opportunity to make collaborative connections with related courses in the University (Journalism, Screenwriting, Illustration, Drama & Performance, Film Studies and Digital Film Production for example). There will be an opportunity to teach existing specialist modules, to contribute to the mandatory spine of modules that integrate professional and creative writing skills and theory, and there is the potential to develop new modules.

The Institute of Humanities has access to a good range of high quality teaching facilities. These facilities have grown and developed as part of the University’s overall, significant expansion in recent years (which has also resulted in the building of its new Indoor Area, attracting international acclaim and from where live international broadcasting now regularly takes place, and its new library, The Hive, which, as the first purpose-built joint University/community library in Europe, is widely acknowledged to be groundbreaking in its scope and approach). 

The post holder will join a creative and vibrant academic community to which creative ‘practice’ and practice-led research are integral and in which theory and practice are mutually informing. Staff members in the Institute have played a significant role in the University’s REF2014 submission. 

There are good numbers of postgraduate research students and the Institute, as a whole, has a lively research culture that draws on the potential for cross-disciplinary exchange offered by its academic breadth. It has a dynamic and ambitious approach to making regional, national and international connections in both academic and professional contexts and this is reflected by the aspirations and approach of the Writing team. Key foci for continuous development within the Institute are: its postgraduate course portfolio (with new MRes now recruiting well); its international research achievement and continuing development of research culture; and innovative development of professional/industry engagement and knowledge transfer work.

Main duties

Main duties

1. To lead, teach and assess Creative & Professional Writing across a wide range modules; supervise and assess students’ third year extended independent writing projects.

2. To contribute to the development of work placement opportunities for students and the development of industry links and professional networks.

3. To participate fully in curriculum development work including planning, development and evaluation of programmes.

4. To design and develop innovative and inspiring learning materials and assessments, where appropriate.

5. To act as a Personal Academic Tutor to undergraduate students.

6. To act as Course Leader.

7. To assist with marketing and recruitment activities such as open days and schools visits, international activities, widening participation and outreach activities, as appropriate and agreed with the line manager.

8. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the Institute and University.

9. To participate in annual staff development and review processes.

10. To actively engage in scholarship in ways which contribute to the University and Institute objectives and contribute to ensuring up-to-date, leading edge teaching.

11. To participate fully in the life of the Institute and University, by engaging in representational and ambassadorial activities in support of the Institute’s activities and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Institute or her/his nominee.

Essential Criteria

1. A good undergraduate degree (2:1 or above).

2. A Masters qualification in Writing or a related subject.

3. Experience of teaching creative and/or professional writing in a university at HE level, to include expertise in writing theory and practice.

4. Experience of module leadership in creative and/or professional writing at HE level.

5. Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills and a commitment to team work.

6. The ability to use virtual environments for learning and teaching and for the publication of students’ writing.

7. Demonstrable understanding of creative writing in a university context.

8. Professional links and networks able to be deployed to the benefit of students, teaching and writing subject culture at Worcester.

9. Proven capacity to develop the ambition, standing and achievements of Worcester’s Creative & Professional Writing course in a UK university context.

Desirable Criteria

1. Experience of Course Leadership in a university-context.

2. Experience of HE curriculum development and planning.

3. Capability to contribute to the development of work placement opportunities for students.

4. A research profile and/or evidence of future research intentions.

5. Teaching qualification or HEA Fellowship. *

*Newly appointed staff who do not already hold HEA professional recognition or a HE teaching qualification, will be required to achieve this within three years of their appointment to the post, either through completion of the PG Cert Learning and Teaching in HE, or for those with significant experience of teaching in HE, via the University’s accredited CPD scheme conferring Fellowship at the appropriate level.
