Elizabeth Roe

A Walsall student is celebrating after achieving First Class Honours in her teaching degree.

Elizabeth Roe joined the University of Worcester three years ago after completing a BTEC in Health and Social Care at Walsall College.

She will graduate with a First Class Honours degree in Primary Initial Teacher Education (with Qualified Teacher Status) at a ceremony at Worcester Cathedral in November.

The 20-year-old said: “I feel extremely lucky and pleased that all my hard work has paid off. I also recognise that I could not have achieved this accomplishment without the input of family, lecturers and my academic tutor, and I'm very thankful for their guidance and support over the last three years.”

Elizabeth has recently accepted a position at the Bridge Special School in Telford, with the intent of undergoing further training to achieve her goal of becoming a Special Educational Needs teacher.

She said she chose to study a BTEC – which is a post-16 qualification - as she felt it was better suited to her learning style.

“University is a brilliant opportunity, in fact the last three years have been truly life changing and the experience you receive when completing a BTEC can only enrich your time at university,” she said.

“I would say if you are unsure as to whether university is the right path, take the time to do your research and find the best fit for you - do not let the notion that because you chose not to do A-levels limit your options. In our current day hands on experience is priceless.”

Elizabeth added: “I am a practical learner and the Primary Initial Teacher Education course at the University of Worcester encompassed first-hand teaching opportunities to enrich the theoretical content which suited my learning style.

“The course presented me with so many opportunities to grow as an individual, teacher and professional. I am truly grateful for the experience and will be leaving the University with treasured memories and friends as well as being equipped to step into the next chapter of my life.”
