"Having left secondary school with a poor academic record I had always assumed my ambition to be a primary school teacher would remain unfulfilled. However, the Foundation Degree in Learning Support (FDLS) has changed that and has started the process of allowing me to realise this ambition and I am now well on the way to achieving QTS!

"The FDLS was an extremely rewarding learning experience and after successfully completing this foundation degree I continued with my studies via the ‘top-up’ year in Education Studies and was ecstatic to be awarded a First Class BA Honours degree. I believe the foundations made during my FDLS to be instrumental in achieving this high grade. Additionally, I feel extremely lucky to have been taught by such highly talented and enthusiastic tutors who guided and nurtured me through those two years of self-discovery and development.

"One of the major benefits of the foundation degree is being able to see educational theories and philosophies being used in everyday situations. This has helped me to develop my understanding of why teachers make some of the choices they make and the principles behind many schools’ ethos. Much of my own philosophy of what makes a good teacher was formed during studying for my FDLS. Consequently, I no longer ‘sit on the fence’ and have the understanding and knowledge to back up my opinions and the values I have developed and deepened, something I did not feel I was capable of doing.

"My learning journey continues as I successfully secured a place on the Graduate Teaching Programme (GTP) in September 2011 and will qualify later on this year.

"I would definitely recommend the FDLS to anyone wishing to broaden their mind and help enhance the learning experience of the children they work alongside."
