Megan Robertson, 21, who studied for a BSc (Hons) in Geography at the University of Worcester, is looking forward to the chance to celebrate the culmination of three years of hard work.

“This day will mean a lot to me and my family as I am the first to go to university,” she said. “Being able to complete the three years and come out the other side as an independent and capable woman makes me feel so proud of what I’ve achieved and how far I’ve come.”

Although Megan was overseas when she received the news that she had achieved top honours in her degree, she was still able to enjoy the moment.

“At the time I was away assisting with fieldwork with the 2nd year geographers,” said the former Sarum Academy student. “The day I found out, the group and I were in Chamonix in the French Alps - 3 days after my 21st birthday – so I was elated to say the least. Although I was away from friends who were no doubt celebrating back home, it was amazing to celebrate with the stunning backdrop of the French Alps at the Summer Solstice street party, and with the 2nd years who partied like they had all achieved a First too.”

Despite having a range of universities to choose from, Worcester was always the stand-out option for Megan.

“I had visited several Russell group universities, but they were quite standard, nothing really stood out for me,” she said. “Worcester was my last university open day, and I could tell that it felt different. I felt a sense of community and could see myself living and studying here – a feeling I didn’t have with the other universities.”

And Megan, who is continuing her studies at Worcester with an MRes in River Science specialising in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, has many fond memories of her time as an undergraduate.

“I played on the Ladies Badminton Team for 3 years during undergrad, so I have fond memories of home and away match days, the dreaded 7am training sessions, Varsity, BUCS Individual Championship in Sheffield, and of course celebrating on Worcester Wednesdays and at Colours Ball,” she said.

“I will also cherish memories of our Christmas formal during 3rd year - which was in the snow! - as well as the Summer Formals, which were one of the highlights of the year for me. Staff and students in their glad rags ready to celebrate the end of the year, it’s always a special night.”

“After my Masters I hope to get started in a career that uses unmanned aerial vehicles, perhaps in flood risk management, but we’ll see,” Megan added.
