Sue joined the university in 2003, having taught for 21 years in secondary schools throughout the UK and abroad. During her time in schools she held a variety of middle management and whole-school responsibilities including heading departments, co-ordinating careers and vocational guidance and acting as a subject mentor for student teachers.

Sue was subject leader for Design and Technology (Food and Textiles) at the University from 2007 until 2018. In this role she aimed to develop confident, capable and creative teachers who can inspire their pupils to engage with exciting and relevant design and technology activities. Sue models good teaching practice in all of her roles and encourages and supports students to develop innovative teaching strategies; to be critically evaluative, to share ideas, and to take intelligent risks.

Sue has contributed to several books on Design and Technology teaching and mentoring, most recently working with colleagues to edit a guide on mentoring. Sue has recently elected to work part time and has assumed a variety of roles within the secondary team.
