Dr Carsten Ambelas Skjøth joined the University of Worcester in 2013 as a senior lecturer after successful post doc positions at Aarhus University (Denmark) and Lund University (Sweden) and was in 2017 granted a professorship in atmospheric sciences.

Carstens 20 years of experience in working with aeroallergens and agricultural air quality. The main scientific questions are related to the exchange between atmosphere and the vegetation/surface and how meteorology affects this exchange and later the concentration of the species in the atmosphere. The studies species includes pollen (e.g. birch, grasses, ragweed) fungal spores (e.g. Alternaria and Cladosporium), pathogens (e.g. Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) and air pollutants, such as particles and ammonia.   The research is typically carried out by combining ground based observations (e.g. pollen, fungal spores or ammonia) with mathematical models and data obtained through remote sensing. 

At the University of Worcester, he leads the research group for Atmospheric Sciences - and palynology, which carry out relevant research in relation to aerobiology, palynology and atmospheric Science.

Previous and existing research grants, projects and networks::

  • AUTOPOLLEN. An EIG EUMETNET programme funded 2018-2022 with the aim to establish an European Consortium that that advances automatic pollen observations. EUMETNET brings multidisciplinary expertise to address the challenges along the entire information chain – from the actual observation through to the final end-user defined product.
  • IPLATFORM. Marie Curie Fellowship on pollen dispersion modelling (oak) and next gen sequencing with the title "Implementation of a dynamical Pollen Module and the transformations of the pollen including feedbacks in a numerical Weather Forecast Model (IPLATFORM)" (2016-18). Funded by EU, Horizon2020
  • PollerGEN. Using molecular genetics to understand grass species pollen deposition: enhancing bio-aerosol models and implications for human health” (2016-19). Funded by National Environmental Research Council, project ID: NE/N002431/1.

I teach on several undergraduate modules and supervise independent studies, PhD students and post docs. My teaching directly connected with the research activities in atmospheric sciences. This involves applying and developing both novel detecting equipment and advanced atmospheric models such as next generation of atmospheric models for use in pollen forecasting.

Current research activities are mainly related to large research projects funded by UK research councils (BBSRC and NERC) and the European Commission (Horizon2020 and FP7) addressing various aspects in relation to production, release and atmospheric dispersal of allergenic pollen, fungal spores and harmful pathogens.
