Dan is a theatre-maker, director and dramaturg. His wide-ranging career in the theatre industry began at Theatre503 in London, where he was part of the literary and programming team. Since then he’s gone on to work with some of the country’s most respected theatre companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company, English Touring Theatre, Sheffield Crucible, Battersea Arts Centre and Ambassadors Theatre Group.

In recent years Dan's work as a director and producer of contemporary touring theatre has seen him deliver over two hundred performances at mid and studio-scale venues nationwide, and he’s taught and directed at some of the UK’s leading drama schools including Oxford School of Drama, Drama Centre London, ArtsEd, Identity Drama School and Guildford School of Acting.

Dan is also the founding artistic director of Dawn State Theatre Company. Since 2012 Dawn State have developed a growing reputation for creating dynamic new touring theatre inspired by classic texts and forgotten stories, using a process of making that draws on adaptation, devising, collaborative writing and physical storytelling to create work that is urgent, passionate, timeless and accessible to all.

Teaching Interests

Dan’s teaching interests focus on theatre-making, the creation and production of dramatic performance and the development of professional practices. He leads the department’s acting pathway and often directs productions for the integrated masters in touring theatre.

Recent productions for Dawn State include

The Wonderful Discovery of Witches in the County of Lancaster (UK Tour 2019; London, Oxford & Edinburgh 2015-16) co-created with playwright Gareth Jandrell; Gulliver’s Returns (Edinburgh and UK tour 2018) which he adapted from Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels; Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King (UK tour 2016) which he also adapted; and A Fever Longing Still (RSC workshop production 2013) co-created with Naomi Said.


Other directing work includes

Todd & God (Edinburgh & UK Tour 2017); The Merchant of Venice (RSC workshop production 2015); Skittles (BAC, Edinburgh Festival & BBC Radio 4 2012) which received the Audio Drama Award for best scripted comedy (as Love and Sweets); and The Biting Point (Theatre503 2012). Drama School and HE productions include Lord of the Flies and DNA (University of Worcester 2018-19); Posh (Northampton University 2017); Three Sisters, Paradoxy, Philistines and A Month in the Country (all Oxford School of Drama 2015-17); Pornography, God of Carnage and Taming of the Shrew (all Guildford School of Acting 2014-16); Comedy of Errors (Arts Ed 2014); and Hedda Gabler (Drama Centre London 2013). Recent work as a dramaturg includes Years of Sunlight (Theatre503 2017) and Dirty Great Love Story (Edinburgh, UK Tour, 59E59 New York & Arts Theatre 2013), which received a Fringe First.
