Alison is the Head of Department for Secondary and Post Compulsory Education and the Associate Head of the School with responsibility for recruitment. Recruitment has been an area of interest and was the focus of her Masters' dissertation. She has led the development of the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP), the Assessment Only Route, School Direct and most recently, the Teacher Apprentice route.

Her roles at the university have included Subject Leader for Design and Technology, Course Leader for GTP and the lead for the PGCE Secondary Programme. Before joining the university Alison taught Design and Technology for 15 years and successfully led a large faculty. She also worked for the OCR exam board including a six-month secondment. Alison has written textbooks relating to Food Technology in Secondary Schools, teacher training and mentoring. She is a fellow of the HEA
